Polyaluminium chloride (PAC)
Polyaluminium chloride (PAC) is the go to chemical currently for use in rainfall activated systems on earthworks sites. PAC is a strong coagulant which uses aluminium ions as its active ingredient. Clays are generally negatively charged with clay particles repelling other particles (two negative charges will repel each other like two magnets) preventing settling. Aluminium ions are positively charged. When the aluminium reacts with the clay these charges neutralise each other leading to a electrically neutral particle. The particles will no longer repel each other and will therefore settle. Mixing is useful to get efficient settling as the particles will collide and bind to each other, causing flocculation to occur with the generation of "flocs" which are larger and heavier than the individual particles. PolyDadmac
Polyaluminium chloride is used in the water treatment industry for the coagulation of
organic and mineral colloids prior to sedimentation and/or filtration. The aluminium
destabilises fine colloidal suspensions and promotes the forming together of large
conglomerations of this material bound in a chemical precipitate (called floc) which is able
to be removed from the water by sedimentation, flotation and/or filtration. In general,
polyaluminium chloride is preferred over aluminium sulphate if a larger, faster forming floc
is desired, as this may remove the need for a flocculant to facilitate sedimentation.

PolyDADMAC
Polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride (shortened polyDADMAC or polyDDA), also commonly polyquaterniu-6, is a homopolymer of diallyldimethylammonium chloride (DADMAC). The molecular weight of polyDADMAC is typically in the range of hundreds of thousands of grams per mole, and even up to a million for some products. PolyDADMAC is usually delivered as a liquid concentrate having a solids level in the range of 10 to 50%. It is a high charge density cationic polymer. The charge density makes it well suited for flocculation.
PolyDADMAC polymers were first prepared and studied in 1957 by Professor George Butler at the University of Florida. It was remarkable as it was soluble in water in contrast at the time to other known synthetic polymers formed by polymerization of monomers containing more than one vinyl functionality. The structure and reaction path was determined in 2002 with studies.
